Do I Need Web Hosting If I Already Have a Domain?

The difference between a domain, web hosting and business email, what each one does, and how to keep all three working for your business.

In short: Yes. A domain is your address on the internet, and hosting is the server where your website actually lives. You need both for a working website, and your domain also needs to be set up correctly for business email.

Domain vs. hosting vs. email

  • Domain name: the address people type, like 509brand.com. You rent it yearly from a registrar.
  • Web hosting: the server that stores your website files and shows them to visitors.
  • Business email: addresses like [email protected], which need DNS records on your domain so mail is delivered and not marked as spam.

What to look for in hosting

  • Speed, so pages load quickly on phones.
  • Daily off-site backups.
  • Security monitoring and cleanup if something goes wrong.
  • Support from people who understand your website, not just the server.

509 Brand websites are hosted on infrastructure from our sister company, Iridium Hosting, a WordPress host based in the Tri-Cities.

Can my domain and hosting be with different companies?

Yes. Many businesses keep their domain at one registrar and point it to their host. What matters is that someone keeps the domain renewed and the DNS records correct for both the website and email.
